Overview

The Past

GEORGE FISHER was born at the foot of Helvellyn, in what was The Old Nag's Head Inn. "Mountains have always held a fascination for me, and I have spent my life on the mountains", he said. In 1947 the Keswick Mountain Rescue team was formed, and over the years George as team leader was involved in hundreds of rescues. In 1980 he was honoured with an M.B.E. for services to mountain rescue. Prior to 1947, rescues were undertaken by the police, not all of whom had the necessary experience or equipment to do the job.  He died in January 1999, aged 73.

ABRAHAM'S photographic shop was built in 1887 by George Abraham to house his photographic business. The business continued under the guidance of his two sons, George and Ashley who were internationally known both as mountain and landscape photographers and pioneer rock climbers. In 1907 Ashley was elected the first president of The Fell and Rock Climbing Club and George was made an honorary member.

One of the most delightful tearooms in the Lake District.
Abraham's Tearoom, upstairs in George Fisher

When George Fisher retired in 1989, the new management team headed up by Anita and Michael Standring, set about a complete refurbishment of the old building. In doing so they maintained the link with the past by incorporating a new tearoom, located underneath the rafters, known as Abraham's Tearoom. It is now acclaimed as one of the most delightful tearooms in the Lake District.
